How Often Should You Repaint Each Room? A Room-by-Room Guide for Homeowners

Keep Your Home Looking Fresh with This Easy Paint Maintenance Timeline

When was the last time you repainted your living room? How about the bathroom? If you're like most homeowners, it's probably been a while—and you're not alone.

At PTG Painting, we often get asked: "How often should I repaint this room?" The answer depends on the room's function, wear and tear, and even the type of paint used.

Here's your room-by-room guide to help you decide when it’s time for a fresh coat of paint.

Living Room & Dining Room: Every 5–7 Years

These are high-visibility rooms, but they don’t see as much wear and tear as others. If you’ve used high-quality paint and maintained it well, you might get up to 7 years out of a good paint job.

Pro Tip: Go with durable, washable paint in an eggshell or satin finish to make touch-ups easier over time.

Bedrooms: Every 5–8 Years (But Kids' Rooms: 2–4 Years)

Adult bedrooms tend to hold up well—especially if the walls are protected from scuffs and stains. But kids? That’s a different story.

Crayon art, sticky fingers, and toy collisions mean children's rooms often need repainting every 2–4 years.

Pro Tip: Use semi-gloss or satin finish in kids' rooms for easier cleaning.

Bathrooms: Every 3–4 Years

Bathrooms deal with humidity, moisture, and temperature changes daily. Even with proper ventilation, paint can peel or mildew over time.

Pro Tip: Always use a mildew-resistant paint made for bathrooms—this will extend the life of your paint job.

Kitchen: Every 3–5 Years

Like bathrooms, kitchens see a lot—cooking grease, heat, and frequent cleaning can wear down your walls faster.

Pro Tip: Satin or semi-gloss paints are ideal for kitchens—they’re easier to wipe clean without losing their color or sheen.

Hallways & High-Traffic Areas: Every 2–3 Years

Hallways, entryways, stairwells—these areas take a beating. From hands brushing the walls to backpacks and pets, they’re the most touched and scuffed spots in the house.

Pro Tip: Durable, washable paint in eggshell or satin finish can make a big difference here. You can also do partial touch-ups between full repaints.

Bonus: Ceilings & Trim

  • Ceilings: Every 10+ years (unless you notice yellowing, cracks, or water stains).

  • Trim/Baseboards: Every 2–4 years—they tend to collect dust, scuffs, and dings.

Is It Time for a Fresh Coat?

If your paint is fading, peeling, or just looking dated, it might be time for a refresh. A new coat of paint can do wonders for your home’s look—and even increase its value.
